“Annabel Lee” was composed by Edgar Allan Poe. His poems are famous for their uncanny gothic tones and themes of death and loss.
“Annabel Lee” was his last poem and one of the most famous poems. It was published in a local newspaper in 1849, two days after the speaker’s death.

The poem’s title, “Annabel Lee,” straightforwardly suggests that the poem is about a specific woman, and her name is repeated rhythmically throughout the poem. Whether Annabel Lee actually existed or was someone from his romantic history, or perhaps a fictional character, was uncertain.
However, her name as the title and its usage give readers a strong impression of his significant affection toward this woman.
This is indeed the trait of this poem; “Annabel Lee” would remain in readers’ heads, since the name was repeated countless times.

The speaker described the setting as “The kingdom by the sea.” It’s easy to imagine a vivid, beautiful scenery, which adds the flavor of a romantic atmosphere.
He emphasized the deep love between himself and the woman of his affection, “Annabel Lee,” throughout the poem.
He also claimed that their love had begun a long time ago and had grown stronger since then, which made even “angels jealous”; this expression implies that he considered their love to be the only, divine one. It is interpreted that the speaker expressed his yearning love for this specific woman.

In fact, he was grieving the death of his wife in real life, who unexpectedly passed at a younger age. According to the speaker, the connection between him and Annabel Lee transcended death; neither the angels in heaven nor the demons under the sea were able to separate them.

If the poem were taken literally, it could be read as an authentic, remarkable love.
However, the poem somewhat gives off the speaker’s excessive, obsessive, and almost unsettling affection for Annabel Lee. It can be interpreted as one-sided love, the speaker’s imaginative and delusional creation. Perhaps, he had laid eyes on Annabel Lee a long time ago when they were children. Yet the fact that she was living in “The kingdom by the sea,” and” high-born,” suggests that she was an inaccessible object of his desires for the speaker.

Nonetheless, his affection for her grew stronger, so that he imagined that they had become lovers. In reality, he was just an obsessive observer. Eventually, Annabel Lee had become sick and passed.
Even after she had rested in peace in her tomb, the speaker’s feeling never eased; “the moon never beams,” and “the stars never rise,” imply his ongoing obsession and struggle with grief.

In conclusion, the speaker conveyed uncontrollable, deep, and everlasting affection and idealized love through the poem. Depending on the readers’ state of mind, the poem can be both a dreamy romantic love story and an eerie account of an obsessive stalker’s mind. Nevertheless, it’s entertaining because readers can easily imagine the scenery and story as if they were watching a movie.
