Epistolary to Digital Messaging
How has the transition from epistolary correspondence to instantaneous digital messaging reshaped not only temporal expectations of communication, but also the cognitive depth, rhetorical structure, and reflective quality of interpersonal discourse?
Epistolary has a long history dating back 5000 years. Unfortunately, it has become less common in the late 20th century for obvious reasons. I assume that post officers mostly deliver packages or bills nowadays. Digital instant messaging allows us to communicate with anyone, regardless of distance, quickly and productively. Writing epistolary is time-consuming, especially when one entrusts words to convey emotions and stories.
I’ll explore the transition from epistolary correspondence to instantaneous digital messaging, and instead of the benefits, what digital systems have taken from us and how they have reshaped our communication.
I, myself, didn’t have much opportunity to communicate through letters. Yet, I still remember whenever I found my name on the envelope, I was delighted. I flipped it enthusiastically, always eager to figure out the sender’s name. The touch of paper and design, the color of ink, handwriting, and the choice of words, every part of a letter displayed the sender’s personality. Then, with subtle excitement, I would attempt to open the envelope cautiously, not to damage the letter, hold the edge, and cut the top in a thin line.
Every letter is unique in how the sender carries their story, whether they addressed the kernel at the beginning or began with small talk, like the seasons, or beat around the bush, writing random incidents in disorder. Even if the story were the same, every letter would be distinct and possess its own remark.
Gripping a pen, zoning out the window, envisioning the recipient’s face; writing letters requires you to immerse yourself in each word because there’s no undo button.
In addition, the paramount fact is that you wouldn’t know when the letter would reach the person, or even if it would ever be delivered.
On the contrary, a digital message mitigates dread. It’ll be delivered as soon as you hit “send.” Additionally, it’ll empower our emotions; instead of being interpreted into words, emojis will tangibly convey our feelings. Despite the half-hearted texts, emojis would always compensate for our lack of sincerity. No need to consider in depth; you can undo the texts, edit, erase, or excuse them in the next text.
What’s even better is that you can push the “AI” button, and the AI will write a text that represents you well. In this digital era, we all need to fit into extremely busy schedules. For instance, watching TikTok or Netflix, or playing games on Roblox, requires our attention all the time. Therefore, even though we have been losing our sense of beauty in communication and emotional depth, instantaneous digital messaging is an excellent tool that suits the current society.
Let’s set it in a specific situation: what if you have a pivotal confession to make? Confession of love, sin, or a long-time secret. I believe that letters would be more compelling than digital messaging. You would meticulously select a suitable paper, pen, and words, and deliberately carry the flow. You would perhaps tear up a nearly finished letter and start again to polish it. With every attempt, your courage would shrink or intensify. After finally finishing the letter, you would make up your mind and send it out. The overwhelming anxiety would ease as time passed.
I believe the letter-writing process and the time you require to sit tight unknowingly whether the letter was delivered or not are salutary reminders to reflect on oneself.
On the other hand, digital messaging allows us to confess immediately and spontaneously. How many people regret the texts they sent on a whim? The most challenging dimension would be the waiting time. As we are accustomed to convenience and instantaneous communication, we have lost our patience. Especially with a polished, functional phone, it now even tells us that the recipient has “read” the message.
And then, you ought to withstand your frustration; why didn’t they respond? It has been ten minutes, are they ignoring my text? They must be busy. Should I send a follow-up? No, it’ll make it worse, or maybe I should erase the text. But wait, it says “read,” so if I erase it, it’ll be awkward.
I must admit that digital messaging certainly suffices in this age. In fact, it’s not that letters are prohibited; we have chosen digital tools over letters. And perhaps I’m romanticizing communication in letters, similar to how, as people get older, they see the past through a filter, as if it were the glory days. But still, I’m intrigued and certain that in the past, people who communicated through letters must have spoken beautifully and poetically in the depths of their thoughts.
More importantly, the letters are worth revisiting. I imagine people must have kept opened letters in a box, treated them like treasures, and revisited them occasionally while waiting for a correspondence. Devouring the favorite part and savoring the lingering sensation after reading it.
In summary, the transition from epistolary correspondence to instantaneous digital messaging has reshaped our temporal expectations and disarrayed cognitive depth, rhetorical structure, and the quality of reflection. However, just as literature has changed according to society, our communication will also change.
I suppose that is the sign of the times.
