Climate change 1

To what extent should governments, rather than individuals, be responsible for tackling climate change?

It has been some time since climate change became a major topic of debate. I believe that the situation has rapidly intensified, and people who denied climate change decades ago can no longer help but believe in it. As global warming becomes more severe, more individuals are changing their habits in the hope of mitigating its further progression. Individual actions are neither hopeless nor helpless; however, their effect is limited. No matter how hard people try, governments ultimately need to steer their policies in a way that has the greatest possible impact on climate change.

Why government action is essential

First, it is obvious that governments are not taking enough measures to mitigate climate change. While they encourage individuals and local businesses to replace plastic materials with sustainable alternatives, they fly to climate conferences by private plane, consume luxury beef steaks, and invest in technology corporations whose harmful practices damage the environment. No matter how often the news reports on a devastating climate crisis, many people will not modify their lifestyles unless they directly experience its impact.

Relying on individuals to change their actions is irresponsible for governments. Some people have already altered their lives by eating plant-based products, avoiding plastic, and using public transportation. However, these changes require personal financial resources and immense effort, while their overall outcomes remain limited. Moreover, outside their own lives, unsustainable choices are everywhere, which can make their efforts seem meaningless.

What governments can do

Second, let us imagine that governments made a solemn vow to bring about a historic shift and revealed constructive, step-by-step strategies to tackle climate change. For instance, they could shift businesses from fossil fuels to renewable energy, reduce unsustainable animal farming and agriculture, and focus on preserving biodiversity rather than prioritizing technological development. These measures would not only be effective but would also significantly foster public awareness.

I do not think immediate, drastic change is plausible, but a gradual shift is entirely attainable. Additionally, governments should warn the public about the urgency of the situation and explain how it is likely to escalate, including the possibility that individuals or their families may experience its effects next. They should do so without hesitation, since human minds are often occupied and forgetful. Humans are highly adaptable; in fact, despite the anxiety it creates, artificial intelligence has spread across businesses at a remarkable speed. If governments offered support in the form of generous subsidies, I believe corporations would be willing to make changes.

Why the climate crisis cannot be dismissed

Some may argue that climate disruptions occurred occasionally throughout human history, even before climate change became a major topic. However, El Niño this year, for example, has been drastically affected by climate change, and rising ocean temperatures have worsened its effects. We are seeing unprecedented extreme heat, wildfires, and floods on one side, and droughts on the other.

Furthermore, climate change can intensify the effects of natural disasters, including wildfires, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. It makes crises even more challenging for people to evacuate and recover from their aftermath. It has repercussions not only for humans but also for wildlife, which must be protected from further loss of natural habitats and degradation of ecosystems.

Conclusion

Sustainable individual actions can help mitigate the consequences of climate change or at least slow its progression. However, substantial participation is crucial, and even then, the overall outcome would be limited without coordinated government action. The role of governing authorities is to manage nations; needless to say, that includes protecting civilians. Therefore, governments should be responsible for tackling climate change, since it has become increasingly harmful. This argument is nothing new, and clearly, governments should already have been addressing this paramount issue for decades.
